[Review] 'High Life' is Like Interstellar, But On Ecstasy

Sexy, mesmerizing and erotic, Claire Denis’ HIGH LIFE is an intriguing view on life, death and sex. In this enchanting film, Denis has crafted a masterclass in science-fiction storytelling.

A career-best Robert Pattinson executes a stunning performance, encompassing tension and a puzzled mindset. A bewitching Juliette Binoche is simply enthralling in supporting, completely alluring, and at times intimidating. Denis’ feature also spotlights the best baby performance on-screen, to date, that I have ever seen.

The film masterfully interweaves the past and the present, building up a touching and mortal dynamic between Pattinson and his daughter, as well as uncovering the mystifying truth of the events that have occurred on the spaceship.

Visually, the film is a treat, with an absolutely breathtaking color palette of bright lights. The visual effects are also stunning, with many visual cues being very reminiscent of Christopher Nolan’s 2014 masterpiece, INTERSTELLAR, such as with the structure of the film’s black hole.

The sci-fi’s score is beguilingly electric and enigmatic, full of heavenly mystery and interstellar exhilaration, adding an intoxicating boost to the film.

Claire Denis has ultimately formed one of the best films of 2019 in HIGH LIFE, with the tantalizing and erotic nature of the film serving up to be a very captivating front for the film to base itself on. Along with strong performances, phenomenally beautiful visuals, and a masterful direction from Denis, the film is a visceral and aesthetically meditative experience.
